Put these five numbers side by side
| Number | What to check |
|---|---|
| Amount received | What will reach your account after any withheld charges? |
| Finance charge | How many dollars does borrowing add? |
| APR | What is the annualized cost, including applicable fees? |
| Total payments | What will you pay across the entire schedule? |
| Payment dates | Can each payment fit alongside your essential expenses? |
A small fee can represent a high APR
APR puts the borrowing cost on an annual basis. A charge attached to a two-week loan cannot be compared directly with an annual interest percentage. Also compare total dollars and payment dates; APR alone does not tell you whether a payment fits your next paycheck.
Try a single-payment example
Simplified calculation: finance charge ÷ amount borrowed × 365 ÷ term in days × 100. Assumes one payment at the end and no additional charges. Not an installment-loan APR calculation or an available offer.
Check what happens if plans change
Look for late-payment charges, returned-payment charges, early-payment terms and any renewal rules. A fee for extending a due date may not reduce the principal. Ask the lender to explain the dollar effect of any change before accepting it.
