Ohio does payday loans differently. Since 2018, a "payday loan" in Ohio is a short-term installment loan: up to $1,000, repaid in equal payments over at least three months, with a hard cap on the total cost. You get the speed of a payday loan without one big payment.

How Ohio payday loans work

Ohio's Short-Term Loan Act, in force since October 29, 2018, governs these loans. Lenders must be licensed by the Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Financial Institutions. Each loan can be up to $1,000, and your total short-term loan balance across lenders cannot exceed $2,500. Terms run from 91 days to one year, with substantially equal installments, so the loan is paid down a bit with every payment.

The price has several parts, all included in the APR: interest of up to 28% a year, a monthly maintenance fee of up to 10% of the original loan or $30, whichever is less, and, for loans of $500 or more, a 2% origination charge. On top of that, the total of all fees and charges can never exceed 60% of the original amount borrowed.

Why Ohio moved to installment-style payday loans

Before 2018, many Ohio lenders made short single-payment loans under other licenses, and borrowers often renewed them again and again. The Short-Term Loan Act replaced that with a single framework: loans of at least 91 days, repaid in equal installments, with every fee counted in the APR and a 60% ceiling on total charges. For borrowers, it means smaller payments spread over several paychecks and a known, capped price from the start.

How to get an Ohio payday loan online

  1. Choose an amount up to $1,000. If you already have short-term loans, keep the total at $2,500 or less.
  2. Pick a schedule from 91 days to a year. Longer terms mean smaller payments but more monthly fees.
  3. Check the APR and total cost. All fees are in the APR, and charges cannot exceed 60% of the loan.
  4. Sign and receive the deposit. Usually on the next business day.

Shorter or longer: how to choose your term

Because the maintenance fee is charged each month, a longer Ohio loan costs more in total even though each payment is smaller. On $1,000, six months costs about $283 at the maximums, while twelve months costs about $538. Choose the shortest schedule whose payment you can comfortably make. A shorter-than-91-day term is allowed only if the monthly payment is no more than 6% of your verified gross monthly income or 7% of your net, whichever is greater.

Paying off early in Ohio

Paying early saves money in two ways: less interest on the remaining balance and fewer months of maintenance fees. If a $1,000, six-month loan is paid off after three months, you avoid three months of maintenance fees and the interest those months would have carried. Ask the lender for a payoff amount before you pay so you clear the balance in full.

Online Ohio payday loans vs. stores

Online Ohio payday loans follow exactly the same law as storefront loans, so the $1,000 cap, the 60% cost limit and the 91-day minimum all apply. Online, you skip the trip, apply at any hour and get the money by direct deposit, and your payments are taken automatically on each due date.

Your protections in Ohio

  • Total charges can never exceed 60% of what you borrowed.
  • You can cancel by 5 p.m. on the third business day by returning the money.
  • A refinance must be into another short-term loan at no more than 28% interest and with no monthly maintenance fee.
  • Every fee must be included in the APR you are shown.
  • Active-duty military and their dependents pay no maintenance fee.

Refinancing an Ohio short-term loan

If you need to restructure a loan, Ohio allows a refinance only into another short-term loan at no more than 28% interest and with no monthly maintenance fee. That keeps refinancing from becoming a way to stack fees. If your payment is getting hard to make, talk to the lender early and ask whether a refinance under these terms would lower it.

Ohio loans for service members

Active-duty service members and their dependents are exempt from Ohio's monthly maintenance fee, and the federal Military Lending Act separately caps most consumer credit to covered borrowers at a 36% military APR. Lenders check covered status and apply both protections automatically.

What Ohioans borrow for

Car repairs, winter utility bills, rent gaps, medical copays and back-to-school costs are the most common reasons. Because Ohio loans are repaid over three months or more, they suit bills that are a bit too big to clear from one paycheck. A $600 brake and tire job, for instance, can be spread across three or four payments instead of emptying a single check.

What Ohio lenders check

Licensed lenders confirm your identity, Ohio address and income, and must make a concerted effort to verify that the new loan keeps your total short-term balance at $2,500 or less. For terms under 91 days, they also verify your income to apply the 6% or 7% payment rule.

Gig work and benefits as income

Delivery and rideshare income, self-employment earnings and benefits such as Social Security, disability and unemployment can all count, as long as they are deposited regularly. Because Ohio terms are at least three months, choose a payment date that matches the day your income lands each month.

Ohio credit unions

Federal credit unions in Ohio can offer payday alternative loans of $200 to $2,000 at up to 28% APR to members. If you belong to one, it is worth asking; if you need money tomorrow, a licensed short-term lender online is usually faster.

Requirements

  • An Ohio resident, 18 or older.
  • Verifiable income from work or benefits.
  • A checking account for deposits and payments.
  • Photo ID, your Social Security number and a phone number.

Ohio loans with bad credit

Ohio lenders focus on your income and your total short-term debt. Bad credit can apply. A low score might mean a smaller amount, but the cost limits are the same for everyone. Our bad credit loans page explains approval in more depth.

Need more than $1,000?

Loans above $1,000 fall under other Ohio lending laws. Ask about an installment loan with a longer schedule; see installment loans and a $2,000 loan.

How fast Ohio loans fund

Decisions are quick, and the deposit usually follows the next business day after you sign. Requests sent on a Saturday or Sunday are generally paid out when banks reopen on Monday.

Check a lender

Look up an Ohio lender's license through NMLS Consumer Access or the state eLicense lookup, both linked from the Division of Financial Institutions. Complaints go to the Ohio Department of Commerce.

Tips for Ohio borrowers

  • Pick the shortest term with a payment you can manage; each extra month adds a maintenance fee.
  • Check the total of payments, not just the monthly amount.
  • Keep your total short-term debt under $2,500.
  • Use the three-day rescission window if you change your mind.
  • Confirm the lender's Ohio license before you sign.

Staying safe

Any lender offering an Ohio "payday loan" in one lump-sum payment due in two weeks, charging fees outside the APR or asking for money upfront is not following Ohio law. Use licensed lenders only. Our form costs nothing to use and is encrypted.

Repaying an Ohio loan

Payments are taken on each scheduled date in equal amounts. You can pay early to reduce interest and, with fewer months outstanding, maintenance fees. If something changes, contact the lender before the due date to discuss your options, including a refinance on Ohio's protected terms.
