Indiana allows larger payday loans than most states, up to $825, with a fee that steps down as the amount goes up. That combination makes it one of the better states to borrow a few hundred dollars quickly and repay it on your next payday.
How a payday loan works in Indiana
Indiana calls payday loans "small loans," and they are governed by the Indiana Small Loan Law. On July 1, 2026, the law was moved from IC 24-4.5-7 into a new Title 37 of the Indiana Code, without changing the consumer limits. Lenders must be licensed by the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions, Consumer Credit Division, and every loan has a term of at least 14 days.
You can borrow up to $825, as long as the loan is no more than 20% of your gross monthly income, and you can have only one small loan with a lender at a time. The finance charge is tiered: 15% on the first $250, 13% on the next $150 and 10% on the rest up to $825. That means the effective rate falls as you borrow more, unlike flat-fee states.
How to get an Indiana payday loan online
- Check your 20% limit. With $2,500 gross monthly income, you can borrow up to $500; with about $4,125 or more, up to $825.
- Apply with your Indiana details. Lenders confirm your address, income and checking account.
- See the tiered fee in dollars. For example, $44 on $300 or $67 on $500.
- Sign and receive the deposit. Usually by the next business day after signing.

Indiana payday fees by amount
| Loan | Maximum charge | You repay | APR over 14 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| $200 | $30 | $230 | About 391% |
| $300 | $44 | $344 | About 382% |
| $400 | $57 | $457 | About 372% |
| $500 | $67 | $567 | About 349% |
| $825 | $99.50 | $924.50 | About 314% |
$300 for 14 days in Indiana
15% on the first $250 is $37.50, and 13% on the remaining $50 is $6.50, for $44 in total. The DFI uses this same example.
How the 20% income rule works
| Gross monthly income | 20% limit | Maximum loan |
|---|---|---|
| $1,500 | $300 | $300 |
| $2,000 | $400 | $400 |
| $3,000 | $600 | $600 |
| $4,125 or more | $825 or more | $825 |
Gross income means before taxes and deductions. If you have more than one income source, include them all so the limit reflects what you really earn.
Why Indiana's tiered fee works in your favor
In flat-fee states, every $100 costs the same. In Indiana, the rate drops as the loan grows: the first $250 is charged at 15%, the next $150 at 13% and the rest at 10%. So an $825 loan costs $99.50, which is about 12% of the amount, while a $250 loan costs $37.50, or 15%. If you genuinely need a larger amount, Indiana's structure makes it cheaper per dollar than many neighboring states.
Payday loan online Indiana: why apply online
A payday loan online in Indiana follows the same law as a store loan, so the $825 cap, the tiered fee and the 14-day minimum all apply. Online, you skip the drive, apply at any hour and get the money by direct deposit. One request can reach more than one licensed lender, which raises your chances of a quick yes.
Extended payment plans in Indiana
Indiana gives repeat borrowers a built-in safety valve. When you take a third, fourth or fifth consecutive loan, the lender must offer an extended payment plan: at least four equal installments over at least 60 days, with no fee. You cannot take a new small loan while in the plan, and you must not be in default to qualify. Ask for it if repaying in one payment would be difficult. On an $825 loan with the $99.50 charge, a plan of four payments works out to about $231 each, spread over two months instead of one $924.50 debit.
Cooling-off after six loans
After six consecutive loans with one lender, an initial loan plus five more each taken within seven days of paying off the last, you must wait seven days before borrowing again from that lender. The rule is designed to break a cycle of back-to-back loans, and the extended payment plan above is the tool to use before you reach it.
Indiana compared with neighboring states
You borrow under the rules of the state where you live.
Indiana payday loans near you, online
Whether you live in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend, Carmel, Fishers, Bloomington, Lafayette, Gary or Hammond, the same state rules apply. Apply online from anywhere in Indiana, from the lakeshore to the Ohio River, and the deposit goes straight to your bank or credit union account. Rural borrowers far from a storefront get exactly the same access as people in the cities.
What Indiana lenders check
Licensed lenders verify your identity, confirm your gross monthly income to apply the 20% limit, check that you do not already have a small loan that would push you over $825 and look at your checking account history. Many do not run a hard pull with the big three bureaus for a small loan, so checking your offer usually leaves your FICO score untouched. If a lender does plan a hard check, it should tell you before it runs one.
What Hoosiers use payday loans for
Indiana borrowers most often need a few hundred dollars for car repairs on long rural commutes, winter heating bills, a utility deposit when moving, back-to-school costs in August or a gap between paychecks for shift workers in manufacturing and logistics. With up to $825 available, many of these can be covered with a single loan repaid on the next payday.
Indiana loans for gig and hourly workers
If your hours or tips vary, lenders look at your average gross income over recent months. Delivery and rideshare drivers can show platform deposits; hourly workers can show pay stubs. The 20% limit is based on gross monthly income, so a good month of overtime can raise what you qualify for.
Requirements
- Indiana residency, 18 or older.
- Gross monthly income at least five times the loan amount.
- An open checking account in your name.
- ID, Social Security number and a mobile phone.
Indiana payday loans with bad credit
Your income and the 20% rule matter more than your score. Bad credit can apply, and a low score usually means a smaller amount rather than a no. Collections or a past default do not automatically disqualify you if your income is steady today. See bad credit loans.
Need more than $825?
For amounts above Indiana's small loan limit, ask for an installment loan with monthly payments instead; our installment loans page explains terms, and the $1,000 loan page shows payment examples.
Credit unions and other Indiana options
If you belong to a federal credit union, ask about a payday alternative loan: $200 to $2,000 at no more than 28% APR, for members. Some Indiana employers also offer paycheck advances. If you need money faster than a membership application allows, a licensed online small loan is the quickest path, and Indiana's tiered fee keeps larger amounts relatively affordable.
Staying safe with Indiana lenders
Only borrow from a lender licensed by the Indiana DFI. Be wary of any online lender that will not show its license, asks for a fee upfront, offers more than $825 as a payday-style loan or wants payment by gift card. Our request form is free and encrypted, and every offer shows the lender's name and full cost before you sign.
How fast Indiana loans fund
Most lenders deposit the money the next business day after you sign, and some fund the same day for early weekday approvals. Weekend requests usually fund on Monday, or Tuesday after a holiday weekend.
Check a lender and file a complaint
Look up any lender's license on the DFI's online portal before you sign. If something goes wrong, you can file a complaint with the DFI online or by phone at 1-800-457-8283.
After you apply
Lenders licensed for Indiana in our partners' network review your request and, if they can help, show the amount, the tiered fee in dollars, the APR and the due date. Sign if it fits your budget, and the deposit is scheduled. Close the offer if not; there is no fee.
Repaying an Indiana loan
The lender collects the full amount on your due date, at least 14 days after you receive the money. You can cancel before close of business the next day by returning the money. If repaying in one go is difficult on a repeat loan, ask for the extended payment plan.
